Harem Hooligans

Arm grabs! Burning jealousy! Catfights! And snarky, snide comments!

In memory of Valentine’s Day which has come and gone, I’m going to be reminiscing about all the awesome love comedy that I’ve encountered so far in eroges, particularly the ones that were memorable. Specifically, the catfights that occur between heroines! Ah, that moment when the heroine/s can no longer contain their jealousy over another rival/s who seemingly gets special treatment from the lead, bringing about argument/s that might or might not involve the lead himself. Not only are they hilarious, but it makes me appreciate the heroines more for their wackiness.

So which catfights were completely memorable for me? Well, in no particular order, here they are:

- BaldrSky Dive 1

Didn’t really post a lot about BaldrSky on this blog, but it’s awesome, with the catfight/s between Rain and Chinatsu more so. Not only did it feel appropriate and very fitting considering the circumstances in which it happened, it was just HILARIOUS. Rain’s normally calm and laid-back attitude takes a backseat when she ends up spending time with Chinatsu – whose feelings for Kou are by no means gone no matter how much she tries to hide it – and Kou, who just has NO idea why the two are suddenly on each other’s case. The brawl in the bar that follows afterwards? Definitely priceless.

The moral of the story? NEVER get in between two arguing females, especially if you’re not even slightly relevant in the least.

Sometimes you don't have to pick between one or the other! Though, in those instances... Survival might become more of a priority than having a harem

- Supreme Candy

Ah, Yuuki and Jakko. The ladies who just won’t budge an inch when it comes to declaring their claim on Yuu, but are fine with being with him, even if it means having to put up with the other’s presences. Which means…snarky comments and fights over Yuu erupting from out of nowhere, with little to no provocation at all required! God, I miss the love comedy in Supreme Candy so much I’m tempted to reinstall it just for those scenes.

Yuuki’s sarcastic towards Jakko, and Jakko is openly hostile, yet Yuu tries his best to make the two amenable towards each other. The results? Sheer hilarity, especially when they compete over the most trivial of things. Which are usually put to an end by Yuu passing out, mostly from blood loss due to nosebleeds.

- Shirogane no Soleil

What do you get when you mix a loli Valkyrie, a well-developed oneesan-type Valkyrie who shares the same body with said loli Valkyrie, an osananajimi tsundere fiancee and a deredere tennen-type imouto and then put a total badass lead in between them? Absolute chaos, that’s what. I’d try and list the various hilarity that ensues whenever they fight over Ryuhei, but there’s just too many to count. Some example, though, include:

  • Miori putting her name on Ryuhei’s house plate (the proper word for it isn’t coming to mind atm, my bad) despite Sol’s objections
  • Hagaru encouraging Ryuhei to molest her ass in the middle of combat
  • Sol and Hagaru fighting over control of their body in order to entertain Ryuhei

And tons more! With a harem like that, who needs enemies?

- Gouen no Soleil

This one depends more on whose route you go through, as it’ll be Rin or Ouka against Helmvigge and Grimgelde, fighting over Nagare. The two Valkyries want their oneesama Nagare (he’s in a female body, hence “oneesama”) to join them in Valhalla, but seeing as he’d need to be DEAD for that to happen, Rin/Ouka definitely isn’t going to let that happen! Of course, the two crazy lovestruck Valkyries won’t let something like that stop them!

How Megu handles jealousy! Likewise, for Arshes!

- Yunibaru! PARANORMAL GIRLS STRIKE

And boy, is this game FULL of it. Megu practically learns her ultimate ether skill from sheer jealousy-powered rage! You’ve got Arshes and Megu’s daily fights (which also involve fighting over Shinichiro) which sometimes Kanae might or might not join in (again, because it might involve fighting over Shinichiro) while the clueless owner just wonders why all these females around him behave in such a manner.

Ahh…to be a clueless harem lead…

Human osananajimi? Or demon osananajimi? My vote goes to Sylphine though! Mmmmmmmm...Sylphine...

- Himegari Dungeon Meister

You’ve got Bridgette, the Maou’s demon osananajimi, and Colette, who is Emilio’s osananajimi. Both want to be useful to Maou Emilio in some way, and both won’t take no for an answer. The result? An entire stage dedicated to them fighting it out over who gets to show Emilio who’s better. If you’re in favor of either one of them, just have that character win the competition! And if you don’t like either of them? Just have Lily win the entire thing, haha.

At first it was just these two Then... It led to THIS?!

- Seinarukana

At first, Satsuki and Nozomi are all over Nozomu’s case, whether it comes to making Nozomu’s bento, to spending time with him, to going home with him, to waking him up, to going to school with him. Clearly, they’ve got this entire competitive rivalry going. And I mean it. Satsuki even employs sneak attacks, such as going to Nozomu’s house WAY early and imitating Nozomi’s voice just to give Nozomu an OHAYOU CHUU~ (<3)! And what happens next?

Nozomu's harem just "accidentally" increases in number during their journey. First Katima, then Ruptna, and then Naya. All falling for Nozomu and his courageous demeanor...because clearly, nothing turns a woman on more than wielding badass swords and cutting down horde after horde of grunt enemies while declaring your intent to protect her in the deepest voice you can muster. And obviously it works! He DID get these ladies in his harem!

Narukana doesn’t bother being competitive with the other girls when it comes to Nozomu, though, simply because she’s laid her claims on him WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back then – so as far as she’s concerned, their fights are pointless because he’s HERS. Ah, Narukana-sama~

DAMN YOU NOZOMU.

Everyone loves Ayumu. Yes. Everyone. And I mean EVERYONE. DAMN YOU AYUMU.

- Tenkuu no Yumina -ForeverDreams-

Now here’s another case that’ll earn the ire of all harem-aspiring, bishoujo-loving eroge players out there. If you want love comedy and catfights over the male lead, Yumina FD DEFINITELY has a lot of it to offer. You’ve got Nayuta’s tsuntsun jealousy moments whenever a misunderstanding arises between Ayumu and another heroine, there’s Yumina trying to ignore her feelings for Ayumu, and then the whole thing with Eleanor and Lilicia who end up falling for Ayumu as well!

Hell, after you finish the game, some of the omake scenarios even contain more love comedy! And one of those scenarios involve the girls actually getting their hands dirty and fighting over the right to claim Ayumu! Truly a man made in Nozomu’s mold.

DAMN THAT AYUMU.

If you’ve got more love comedy examples to offer, do point em out! For now, I’ll either be reinstalling Supreme Candy, or indulging myself with Makai Tenshi Djibril 4′s trial.
